Meet Turkey!

4 Months-Old ~ Iqaluit Special

From the North, with love: Turkey is ready to melt your heart!

Turkey is a young, bouncy, bundle of sweetness, energy, and affection who has quickly become the heart of his foster home. He’s the perfect mix of playful puppy and gentle cuddle bug, and everything about him suggests he will grow into an incredibly loyal, loving companion. Turkey is the kind of dog who wants to be part of a family’s daily rhythm - the noise, the activity, the laughter, and the quiet moments too. He has a big personality, but an even bigger heart!

From the moment he arrived, Turkey fit seamlessly into a home with children and another dog. He absolutely adores kids and is consistently gentle, affectionate, and thrilled to be included in anything they’re doing. Whether he’s playing in the yard or curled up beside them while they watch TV, Turkey sees children as his people, and his easygoing nature makes him a wonderful match for a family environment. He also thrives with canine companionship. Turkey loves playing with the resident dog, and that playful interaction helps him burn off energy and gain confidence. Though he doesn’t require another dog in his forever home, he would certainly benefit from one - especially one willing to run, chase, and wrestle with him.

Turkey hasn’t met any cats or farm animals, though he did once spot a rabbit and immediately decided chasing it would be the highlight of his day. Like many young dogs, he has a natural prey drive, but nothing out of the ordinary for a growing pup.

House training has gone impressively well for his age. Turkey is very close to fully housetrained, especially with frequent outdoor breaks. He has had only a handful of accidents since arriving in foster care, and he’s even started going to the door to signal that he needs out. Structure and routine have made a big difference for him, and a family willing to maintain that consistency will see this progress continue seamlessly.

Crate training, however, is still a work in progress. Interestingly, Turkey genuinely likes his crate - he goes into it voluntarily to relax, happily eats his meals there, and clearly sees it as a safe space. But once the door closes, he becomes anxious. He has been left alone for up to two hours and struggles the whole time, crying until his people return. This isn’t uncommon for young, sensitive puppies, and with time, patience, and gentle practice, he will likely improve. At night, he sleeps quietly and contentedly with his humans and makes it through until morning without issue.

Turkey is what you’d call a “velcro dog.” He wants to be near his people, always. If someone goes into another room and he can’t follow, he cries and scratches to be let in. Because of this, he’s best suited for a home where someone is around during the day - a work-from-home household, an active retired person, or a family with a predictable schedule. His separation anxiety is manageable, but he will need continued support and a loving home that understands he isn’t ready to be left alone for long stretches.

In terms of behavior, Turkey is still a puppy - curious, sometimes mischievous, and very enthusiastic about chewing. He’s learning what’s appropriate and what isn’t, and he redirects well to toys. He loves treats (all treats, truly!), making him a very easy dog to train. He already knows sit, down, and shake a paw, and he loves practicing his skills for rewards.

Walks are a highlight of his day. Turkey wears a harness and has come a long way with leash manners. He still pulls and wanders, but he improves a little more every day. He can be nervous when cars pass, but instead of panicking, he now sits patiently until they’re gone - a sweet little quirk that shows how eager he is to learn and feel safe.

Turkey’s estimated weight at full maturity is around 35lbs and his ideal home is one that balances activity and companionship. He would thrive with another playful dog, but he would also do well with an active individual or family willing to include him in daily walks, outdoor play, and training. He is not suited to a sedentary household or one where he’d spend long hours alone.

Above all, Turkey is a puppy with enormous potential. He’s bright, affectionate, wonderfully intuitive, and deeply connected to the people he loves. If you’re looking for a devoted friend who will celebrate your joys, follow you from room to room, nap at your feet, and greet every day with enthusiasm, Turkey may be the perfect companion for you. He is ready for his forever home - one filled with warmth, routine, patience, and lots of love.
