Meeet Tomo! This handsome 4½-year-old boy with a curious nature, a playful spirit, and a personality that really begins to shine once he feels comfortable with you.
Tomo can be a little standoffish when first meeting someone, but give him some time to build trust and you’ll discover an affectionate guy who loves to cuddle and be part of whatever his people are doing. His foster describes him as incredibly curious - okay, nosy - and he likes to know what everyone is up to. He’s also constantly looking to his people for direction, which makes him very responsive to positive guidance and gives him lots of potential for continued training.
Tomo currently enjoys four walks each day, ranging from about 10 to 30 minutes, and would be a great match for a moderately active home. He pulls a little on leash but responds well to correction. He can sometimes become reactive toward people who appear nervous or fearful of him while he is leashed, including lunging, so his future family should be comfortable continuing to work with him on calm, positive leash manners. Although Tomo previously used pee pads because his former owner had limited ability to take him outside, he has been accident-free in his foster home since his arrival. He is not crate trained and does experience some separation anxiety when left alone.
Tomo can also be vocal when someone is at the door, so apartment or condo living with close neighbours would not be a good fit for him. A detached home where a little canine commentary won’t cause neighbourly unrest would be much better suited to this fellow.
Tomo has lived successfully with a very dog-savvy cat who has taught him to respect feline boundaries, and he previously lived with a hamster. He meets other dogs well on leash, although he can be impulsive and a little too enthusiastic about getting into their personal space. He would likely be happiest as the only dog, but could potentially live with a well-matched dog who is comfortable setting appropriate boundaries. Because he hasn’t had much experience with children, we feel an adult home or one with older, dog-savvy children would be the best choice.
Tomo loves food, car rides, playtime and cuddles, doesn’t show resource guarding, and generally approaches life with cheerful enthusiasm. He still has a few puppy-like habits, including jumping up and occasional playful nibbling, but he does very well with clear expectations and guidance.
Tomo is looking for people who will give him structure, companionship and the chance to keep learning. In return, they’ll get an affectionate, entertaining sidekick who plans to be fully involved in family life - whether he was invited or not!
