Terrier Mix | 1 Year | Female | Small

Ita is a special dog who was rescued after a traumatic life on the streets of Mexico. Due to her background, she is a very nervous dog and takes a long time to warm up to new people and environments. The key to bringing this beautiful little dog out of her shell is another dog, and therefore a home with at least one other well-socialized dog is a MUST. When in the presence of a confident, happy, well-balanced canine, Ita comes alive in play and shows a completely different side to her otherwise reserved personality, and she is beginning to take an interest and joy in her toys. She does have a mild prey drive, and would likely give chase to cats in play, so a home without cats or with a dog savvy cat may be best for her. She has excellent house manners, and is very clean and low-shedding. During the night, Ita sleeps well in her crate, and will give a little whine when she needs to go outside. Upon her arrival, Ita did have separation anxiety which remains a work in progress, so we are looking for a home for her where she will not be left alone for extended periods of time with family who are patient and willing to work on building her comfort level around being on her own for brief periods of time.

Ita is still quite nervous of the world outside, so a fully fenced yard is necessary. She will need a lot of positive reinforcement when outdoors, and lots of work is needed to get her comfortable on leash. She shows no sign of aggressive behaviour, but has likely been mistreated at some point as she will cower and retreat with sudden or loud movements. Therefore we will only consider a home without children under the age of 12 who understand her need for a more calm and relaxed atmosphere.

Please note that due to the high volume of applications we receive on a daily basis, only those who meet the requirements we have outlined above will be considered, and contacted further. Thank you!
