Meet Max!

1 Year ~ Shih Tzu

Looking for a forever friend? Max has you covered!

Max is a lovable, quirky, and incredibly sweet one-year-old pup looking for a forever family to stick to—literally. He’s a classic Velcro dog who wants to be right by your side no matter what you’re doing. Whether it’s riding along in the car, waiting at school pickup, or lounging on the back of the couch while you watch TV, Max is your constant little shadow.

Max is currently being fostered in a busy home with young children (including twin 4-year-olds) and has shown endless patience, being consistently calm and gentle. He enjoys meeting other dogs and is respectful of the resident cranky cat. Max would be content as the only pet or with another friendly dog, as long as he gets plenty of attention from his humans.

Max would thrive in a home where someone is around most of the day. He’s not suited to long stretches alone, as he does struggle with separation anxiety. For that reason, a stay-at-home parent,  or someone who works from home would be ideal.

Max is a sweet and eager-to-please guy, but he’s still working on his house training. He doesn’t yet signal when he needs to go out, so his foster mom times his breaks carefully and goes outside with him to encourage success. He occasionally still marks indoors and consistency will be key for continued progress. He’s crate-resistant and gets quite vocal when confined for long periods, so crate training may not be ideal for him at this stage, but could be a work in progress with some patience and positive reinforcement. Due to his separation anxiety, he hasn’t been left uncrated and unsupervised for an extended period of time, and it’s likely he would get into mischief if left alone too long. He walks well with a harness and isn’t a puller—in fact, it’s more common that his humans are tugging him along because he wants to stop and sniff every mailbox and light post. He tires quickly in warm weather and happily accepts a ride in your arms after a short walk

Max is currently eating kibble mixed with a little something yummy like canned food or scrambled eggs. He has a picky palate when it comes to treats but is absolutely obsessed with bully sticks and they have been a lifesaver for redirecting chewing behavior and keeping him busy. He doesn’t show resource guarding and knows which toys are his.

Max is going to require regular professional grooms to keep his coat, healthy and mat-free.

He loves riding shotgun in the car, whether it’s school drop-off or to a soccer game. His favorite spots are on the back of the couch (with his people) or at the foot of the bed.

The Bottom Line:

Max is a gentle, affectionate, slightly stubborn but incredibly loyal pup who will make someone a devoted little shadow. He’s still figuring out a few things—like house training and how to be alone—but his sweet temperament and desire to be close to his people shine through in everything he does. Due to his age and energy level, we would like to find him an active home with a fully fenced yard. We are aiming to find him a family with children he can grow up with.

If you’re looking for a best friend who will be your constant companion, Max might be the perfect match.
