Lou - 4 years old

Lou the Malamute is looking for love! Estimated to be approximately 4 years of age, he is ready to find his happily ever after. Lou joined our rescue after being pulled from a high kill pound where he found himself after a lifetime of neglect and living outside. He was never appropriately socialized as a pup and as a result, he does have a hard time reading the body language of other dogs, and hasn’t quite figured out how to positively engage them in play…but he is learning! When Lou first arrived in our care, he was understandably mistrustful of humans, and he was lacking confidence, not knowing how to be a dog or what was expected of him. We could see his tremendous potential to be an amazing canine companion, but that he needed the opportunity to decompress and reset his brain, so our team made the investment and enrolled Lou in a 100-day Detox program in the Muskoka’s where this beautiful boy has been able to spend the best summer of his life, just being a dog. Working with a professional trainer during this period, this is what we have been told about Lou’s recovery and his needs in a forever home:

“Lou needs Husky-savvy folks who know the breed’s vast communication skills and how much they want to be loved. He is ideal for those who like a little spunkiness but don’t need a super high energy dog as he tires quickly. His ideal people will need to have the time, love and patience to teach him all the indoor house stuff. He is willing and wants so much to please and to be with the right people. While Lou loves to have a playmate, he is not suited for a general dog park. He starts as a rough playmate and does best with female dogs with strong communication skills who will stand up to him. He would be happy to have a large fenced yard, spending time with trusted humans and enjoying leisurely walks.”

Lou has not been around cats, so this is an unknown for him, and we feel a home without children would be best at this time. Upon his arrival, Lou’s coat was thin, and he had large bald batches which have slowly begun to fill in. He is currently thriving on Inukshuk Pro Food diet which will help continue his coat’s overall improvement.

Because Lou is out in Muskoka until September 13th, we will be setting up meet and greet days at Happy Tails Pet Resort in the hopes of finding a home he can transition into once his 100-day program comes to an end in mid-September.
